Sometimes life feels overwhelming, with intense emotions, relationship struggles, and/or patterns of self-destructive behavior that are hard to break. Whether you're dealing with ongoing stress, difficulties regulating your emotions, or a sense of emptiness, these are all challenges that can take a toll on your mental health and well-being. You don’t have to navigate these struggles alone.

DBT focuses on building skills that can help you to better manage overwhelming emotions, improve your relationships, and cope with distress in healthy ways. These skills include mindfulness, which teaches you to stay present and connected to the moment; emotional regulation, which helps you manage intense feelings without being controlled by them; distress tolerance, which equips you with tools to handle crisis situations without making them worse; and interpersonal effectiveness, which guides you in setting healthy boundaries and communicating your needs more clearly. By learning and applying these skills, you can create more balance in your life, build emotional resilience, and develop stronger, more fulfilling connections with others.

If you're ready to start your journey toward emotional stability, stronger relationships, and a sense of inner peace, I’m here to help. I offer DBT-informed individual therapy in NYC, Brooklyn, and virtually to anyone in New York state.

Asked
Questions

What is DBT?

DBT is a cognitive-behavioral therapeutic modality that focuses on teaching clients skills to manage intense emotions, improve interpersonal relationships, and reduce self-destructive behaviors. It incorporates aspects of cognitive-behavioral therapy with mindfulness practices and acceptance techniques.

How does DBT work?

DBT teaches clients skills to help them manage difficult emotions, reduce problematic behaviors, and improve their relationships.

Traditional DBT involves four key components:

  • Individual Therapy: Clients meet one-on-one with a therapist to address their specific challenges and work on personal goals. The therapist helps the client apply DBT skills to their everyday life.

  • Group Skills Training: Clients participate in group sessions where they learn and practice skills for mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

  • Phone Coaching: Clients can call their therapist between sessions for support and guidance on how to apply DBT skills in real-life situations.

  • Therapist Consultation Team: DBT therapists meet regularly with a team of colleagues to support one another and to ensure that treatment is effective.

DBT informed therapy incorporates some but not all aspects of traditional DBT treatment. This might look like individual therapy that focuses on addressing immediate concerns by applying relevant DBT skills, or integrating DBT techniques into other therapeutic approaches to provide a more flexible and tailored treatment.
