If you're considering online EMDR therapy, you might be wondering how it works and if it's effective. Let’s explore what EMDR is, how it works in a virtual setting, and other essential details to help you decide if online EMDR therapy right for you.

What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s a specialized therapy designed to help process traumatic memories and reduce the distress associated with them. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR uses a unique 8-phase approach that focuses on activating and desensitizing upsetting memories in order to eventually release the negative emotions or beliefs tied to those past events.

Is online EMDR therapy effective?

Yes! Research shows that online EMDR can be just as effective as in-person sessions. As long as certain requirements are met—like having a stable internet connection and a private space—you can expect similar outcomes. Many therapists, including myself, have found that virtual EMDR allows for a focused and structured experience, making it a powerful tool for healing.

Some people report that online EMDR has helped them to feel more comfortable, which can make it easier to open up about difficult memories. Others have reported that the convenience and travel time savings has made it easier to be consistent with their session. Additionally, some people with symptoms of anxiety or depression that make it difficult to leave their home report that they would not have been able to get the help that they needed without the option of virtual EMDR therapy.

What are the similarities and differences between online EMDR and in-person EMDR?

Similarities

  • Same Protocol: Both online and in-person EMDR follow the same 8-phase protocol.

  • Bilateral Stimulation: The methods used for bilateral stimulation (eye movements, auditory tones, and tapping) remain consistent, although they may be adapted for online use.

  • Therapeutic Relationship: A strong therapeutic alliance based on trust and empathy is essential in both settings.

Differences

  • Delivery of Bilateral Stimulation: In-person EMDR might involve a therapist using a light bar or tapping on you, while online therapy typically uses software for eye movements and sounds, and you may self-tap.

  • Environment: In-person sessions occur in a therapist’s office, while online sessions are held in your chosen private space, which can be more comfortable for some clients.

How long does EMDR therapy take?

The duration of EMDR therapy can vary based on individual needs and the complexity of the trauma being processed. Typically, sessions last 45 minutes (or longer if you opt for EMDR intensives). Many clients start to notice positive changes within a few sessions, often feeling relief after three to six sessions.

How does EMDR therapy work on a trauma?

EMDR therapy helps reprocess traumatic memories by desensitizing them. During sessions, clients focus on specific distressing memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements. This helps the brain process and integrate these memories more effectively, reducing their emotional charge. As a result, clients can develop healthier beliefs about themselves and their experiences.

Is EMDR safe?

Yes, EMDR is considered safe for most individuals. While it may evoke uncomfortable feelings, it’s conducted in a controlled and supportive environment. Therapists use grounding techniques to help clients feel secure throughout the process. It's important to work with a trained EMDR therapist who can guide you and ensure your safety.

Can you do EMDR therapy to yourself?

Self-administered EMDR is not recommended. The process requires the guidance of a trained therapist to navigate the complex emotions and memories that arise. While there are resources available for self-help, engaging in EMDR with a professional ensures a structured and safe approach to processing trauma.
